Clip in Extensions (fast trick for fuller hair)

I'm going to New York for the first time in two weeks!!!! So excited for the trip and to take photos of all the cool sites. The only thing that has been stressing me is pictures of myself... sad I know. This isn't like me at all but since I got that horrible hair cut, over a year ago, I have not felt cute at all.

I was thinking of something I could do to help me feel more attrative in my NYC pictures and the thing I came up with was CLIP IN EXTENSIONS. I bought some last fall for my photo and also had some extra hair from my old weft sew in extensions, I called my good friend and hair dresser extraordinare Miss Caroline Bybee and told her my plight. She set up an apt with me for later that same week and we found a way for me to look amazing while on my trip.

In this blog I am going to go through the 411 on clip in extensions.

Reasons to Wear Clip in Extensions 

1. You can take them out anytime you want to.
2. For a little length if your hair is shorter than you want it to be.
3. For more volume.
4. Special Occasions (Trip, Wedding, Hot Date, or Photo Shoot)



Clip in Extensions get a bad wrap for the following reasons:

1. People who get cheap hair that looks horrible.

2. Clip in hair that doesn't match your real hair.

3. Super long extensions that look fake.

4. People who put their extensions in wrong.



This is how we over come those issues:

#1. Go to a hair dresser that specializes in extensions, remember how I called Caroline to set up an appointment, I knew Caroline specialized in extensions and would do a great job. If you do this wrong it could look horrible so follow my advise and do your homework before you invest in exceptions.

#2. Once you find someone who can do the type of extension you want, (i.e., sew in, bond, clip in, strand by strand), set up a time to go in and have them match your hair. They should have a color ring with all different types of color on it, they will need to match your hair to know what color and texture of hair extensions to order for you.

Also another important thing to know is if you want machine sewn or hand sewn hair. Machine sewn is less expensive and hand sewn is less bulky at the base and will blend in better. I recommend hand sewn for fine hair types, and for all hair types at the top of the head.

#3. Length: Where do I start... I'm sure if your stylist is good enough you can pull off anything. That being said try to be moderate on the length of your extensions, unless you want it to be obvious that you have extensions in. My motto is "Unnaturally Natural"... Extensions are great if you do them right.

#4. You don't want your extensions showing it looks cheap and super fake.

Here are a few tips to avoid that problem!1. Section your hair off in three areas.

2. back comb the section of hair you are going to be applying the clip to.

3. If it is a longer section with multiple clips, clip in the middle clip in first and then do the sides.

4. Back comb the hair you are going to lay over the extension section. That way you can more easily disguise/hide the extension.

Note: Your extensions should last you a while if you properly care for them.

Here are a few tips Caroline gave me to care for your (extension) hair!

Hair extensions are made from real human hair, but do not receive the proper amount of daily oils like our existing natural hair, because they are no longer attached to a scalp. Be sure to wash your hair extensions 1-2 times a week with a hydrating shampoo and conditioner, as often as they start to feel dry or brittle, directing the water down the hair shaft to avoid knotting or tangling.

It's very important when maintaining the hair using an alcohol-free serum to seal in moisture when the hair is damp, this will combat frizz and prolong the life of the hair.

REMEMBER to love and care for your own hair just as much, as it is now bearing the weight of your new clip in extensions. To detangle your hair and your extensions, comb from the "bottom up", as they say, meaning, combing down beginning from the bottom 2 inches, moving up 2 inches at a time and continuing down the hair shaft to the ends.

Styling cream is totally acceptable to use on the hair extensions as long as, again, it's alcohol free, as not to dry out the hair. You can blow dry and curl and style your new hair extensions as safely and as normal as your own natural hair!
